The JNLR (Joint National Listenership Research) project is a cornerstone of the Irish radio industry, providing essential audience data to inform advertising strategies and programming decisions. Commissioned by a joint committee of key industry stakeholders, including national, regional and local stations, AAI, IAPI and Coimisiún na Meán, the JNLR survey has two primary objectives:

  • Reliable Audience Estimates: The core objective is to deliver robust and accurate audience estimates to national, regional, and local radio stations across Ireland. This data is crucial for advertisers seeking to optimise their media spend and reach their target audiences effectively.
  • Programming Analysis and Planning:  Beyond advertising, the JNLR survey provides valuable insights into listening habits and preferences, enabling radio stations to refine their programming schedules and better cater to their listeners’ needs.

Since its inception in 1989, the JNLR project has been executed by Ipsos B&A with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring the highest standards of data quality and methodological rigor. Key aspects of the research approach include:

  • Robust Sampling Methodology:  Annually, Ipsos B&A conducts approximately 16,800 interviews in-home, face-to-face, with adults aged 15+ across all radio franchise areas in Ireland. The stratified random sampling technique employing a unique starting address and quota controls, ensures a representative sample within each franchise area, building to a national sample reflecting the Irish population.
  • One-Day-Aided Recall:  This established methodology captures detailed listening patterns by prompting respondents to recall their listening activity, including time spent listening, for the day preceding the interview. This approach provides granular data on station and programme reach, market share of listening minutes, and quarter-hour listening figures.
  • Data Processing and Delivery:  Data undergoes rigorous processing and weighting procedures to align with national population estimates. Results are disseminated quarterly via a dedicated online portal, providing users with comprehensive data analysis.
  • Data is delivered to the JNLR group for input to a reach and frequency schedule evaluation tool.

The JNLR project has consistently delivered high-quality audience data for over three decades, becoming an indispensable currency for the Irish radio industry. Key outcomes include:

  • Long-Term Data Trends: The project’s longevity enables the tracking of long-term listening trends, providing invaluable insights into the evolving media landscape and changing consumption habits.
  • Transparency and Accountability:  The collaborative nature of the JNLR project, with its multi-stakeholder governance structure, ensures transparency and accountability, fostering trust in the data’s reliability and objectivity.
  • Informed Decision-Making: By providing accurate and timely audience data, the JNLR project empowers stakeholders across the radio industry to make informed decisions regarding advertising investments, programming strategies, and overall industry development.

The JNLR project exemplifies Ipsos B&A’s commitment to delivering robust and insightful research solutions for complex industry challenges. Our long-standing experience, coupled with our rigorous methodologies and dedication to client satisfaction, ensures that we continue to provide the gold standard in radio audience measurement in Ireland.
