Trust in Gardai and Bankers trending upwards.

The Ipsos Veracity Index is the longest-running poll on trust in professions in Ireland, first measured in 2005, allowing the evaluation of key trends over time. The 2025 edition, conducted via nationally representative telephone survey, tracked the latest movements in public trust in key professions.

Though trust in some professions remains relatively unchanged over time – for example, healthcare professionals consistently top the poll – some professions have seen positive increases in public trust since 2019, with selected trends over that period showing;

2019 vs. 2025:

  • Trust in Gardai up 11 points to 84%.
  • Trust in Civil Servants up 8 points to 75%.
  • Trust in Local Councilors up 10 points to 51%.
  • Trust in Bankers up 21 points to 48%.

Looking back further to 2005, there have been some significant changes in trust levels over that 20-year period for the following groups;

2005 vs. 2025:

  • Trust in Gardai up 18 points to 84%.
  • Trust in Civil Servants up 12 points to 75%.
  • Trust in Business Leaders up 17 points to 46%.
  • Trust in Government Ministers up 9 points to 32%.
  • However, trust in our fellow citizen has fallen, down 6 points to 60%.
