Health of the Nation 2025

SHARE:

This was the seventh report in the series, the first being undertaken in 2018.

Ipsos B&A conducted the Health of the Nation Research for Irish Life in July 2025.

Questions were asked of a robust sample of 1,033 adults aged 16+. The sample was quota controlled to be representative of the ROI population aged 16+ based on Central Statistics Office (CSO) 2022 figures for gender, age, region, and area. The sample also met the Association of Market Research Organisations (AIMRO) agreed figures for social class. National population norms are in line with CSO.

Interviewing was completed by members of the Ipsos B&A Online Panel. This panel is regularly refreshed, while strict quality controls are in place on all surveys submitted.

The report evidences that in recent years, the nation’s self-reported overall health is stagnant,  it is below pre-pandemic levels, and results mask a growing health divide. While men, older people, and higher-income groups are improving, women, younger adults (16-34), and parents are struggling significantly with declining mental and physical health.

Gender Gap: Women report worse mental and physical health than men

Squeezed middle: Parents’ feelings of stress are greater than those without children

Lifestage: Under 35s are using social media and/or AI to better understand their health

Running out of time: In addition, social media is the leading addiction people tackle, surpassing alcohol and nicotine.

Irish Life has used the findings to good effect in creating a report designed to support employers in adapting their wellbeing strategies to meet the needs for employees
