Insights from our latest research conducted on behalf of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) delves into consumer tipping behaviours and attitudes among a representative sample of Irish consumers.
Key highlights from the findings include:
- Tipping Frequency: 90% of consumers tip at least occasionally.
- Demographics and Tipping: The data indicates that women and those over the age of 35 are more inclined to tip.
- Perception of Tipping: Two-thirds of the respondents feel that tipping is increasingly becoming an obligation rather than a choice.
- Opting Out Preferences: A significant 75% of consumers express a desire for businesses to simplify the process of opting out of tipping.
- Unexpected Charges: One-fifth of consumers have recently faced surprise additional charges on their bills.
- Technology and Mistakes: Among those encountering standalone tipping terminals, 1 in 4 have inadvertently tapped them.
In response to these findings, the CCPC has issued new guidance to aid restaurant owners and traders in effectively leveraging new technologies for tip collection.
